Job Description Summary
Provide security and police protection for persons and various university buildings and/or property within the university community, by enforcing the laws of the State of Michigan and administrative ordinances. This position is represented by the Police Officer's Association.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Provide security and protective services to the university community by patrolling assigned areas or buildings to enforce laws and administrative ordinances, which may include security of individual buildings/stationary locations.
2. Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control. Many situations will require the incumbent to provide on-site lead supervision over lower level officers who may be present.
3. Deter, restrain, and/or arrest individuals who may be attempting to commit, are committing or have committed a criminal act.
4. Complete necessary administrative forms/reports related to incidents and/or arrests, including gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses.
5. Occasionally assist investigators and/or inspectors to conduct investigations or special projects as requested.
6. Occasionally provide security during the transportation of large sums of cash and/or other valuables.
7. Maintain regular radio contact with the communications center to advise dispatch of unusual situations, and to request backup when necessary.
8. Appear in court regarding incidents that occur in the university community when necessary.
9. Provide crowd and/or traffic control during scheduled activities or during emergency situations.
10. Admit authorized personnel into locked buildings during security hours.
11. Provide emergency first aid and/or CPR to injured persons or assist in the transportation of ill or injured persons, when necessary.
12. Attend internal and/or external training courses, classes, and seminars to further develop skills and knowledge.
13. Help higher-level staff members train lower-level officers.
14. Provide basic information and directions to university personnel, students, and/or the general public.
15. Provide supervisors with regular status reports/summaries related to the overall training and performance of lower-level officers.
16. Functional supervision is occasionally exercised over lower-level officers.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
•High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
•Possession of an MCOLES license from the State of Michigan or out of state law enforcement certification meeting MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training & Experience requirements (located at http://www.michigan.gov/mcoles/0,4607,7-229-41624,00.html)
•Out of sate candidates, meeting the above MCOLES standards must obtain MCOLES license as condition of employment at first testing opportunity MCOLES provides.

•Previous experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to complete routine reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of problems in standardized situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written or oral form.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following 4 required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
Required University Training:

  • Annual Data Security Training
  • Annual Title IX Training
Required Departmental Training:
  • In addition to the background check conducted through Human Resources, the selected candidate must also successfully clear an additional background investigation and personal history questionnaire conducted through Public Safety and Police Services.

Other Conditions of Employment:
